Working student: what to look out for?

Requirements, social security and income tax liability as a working student

Student life! For outsiders, it usually seems chilled out and carefree. However, some students can only dream of this: horrendous rents for student rooms, rising living costs… It's not that easy to make ends meet. Some people look for a mini-job to earn a little extra money. Others pursue a working student activity alongside their bachelor's or master's studies. We tell you the most important things you need to know about a working student job.

Reasons

Who looks for a job as a working student, whose incentive is primarily the money. But with a student job you can kill two birds with one stone: In addition to the earnings, you can gain professional experience at an early stage. Because the work of a student trainee differs significantly from that of a mini-jobber: The tasks often have a technical proximity to the field of study. This results in several advantages at once:

  • working as a student trainee can be credited as a compulsory internship in many degree programs.
  • Working students can often write their final thesis at the company.
  • The job can be the stepping stone for a career start. Finally, you already have a foot in the door of the company.

However, there are other advantages to working as a student trainee: In addition to gaining an insight into possible jobs after graduation, you can also make important contacts. And these can be a door opener: Vitamin B often pays off in the business sector.

Requirements

Not every student who works part-time is automatically a student trainee. As a working student, certain requirements must be met. Here is a small checklist:

  • The student must be enrolled at a university or college as a regular student. The current enrollment certificate must be presented to the employer.
  • The study must be recognizably the main activity of the student.
  • The student must not be on vacation semester.
  • The 25. The student must not have completed more than one semester.
  • The weekly working time may not exceed 20 hours, except:
  • during the semester break
  • with jobs that are limited to three months
  • when working mainly during evening and night hours or on weekends, but for no longer than a total of 26 weeks or 182 calendar days within a 12-month period

Social security

Requirements met? Then nothing stands in the way of a working student job. In this case, the student is also exempt from contributions for health, nursing care and unemployment insurance, but not from pension insurance. All students must be insured with a public or private health insurance company, often they are insured with their parents in the family. Before taking up any employment, the health insurance company must be informed, because the family insurance through the parents remains only up to a certain income level.

The student is not exempt from social insurance if:

  • the studies are completed on a part-time basis
  • he takes a semester off
  • he or she is studying for a doctorate
  • he or she is doing a dual course of study

Income tax

In principle, working students are liable to pay income tax. But don't worry: The income is only taxed above a certain level, so there is usually no tax burden. The basic allowance is 9.408 euros (as of 2020). Those who fall below this limit can reclaim the tax deducted with their tax return. Alternatively, one can submit a wage tax exemption to the employer. By the way, mini-jobs with monthly earnings of up to 450 euros are tax-free.

A student must be careful if he or she not only works as a student trainee, but also receives student grants (Bafog). Here you can quickly reach the upper limit of 5.crack 400 euros (as of 2020) in earnings. If this is reached, the additional income will be deducted from the Bafog.

Vacation entitlement

Of course, working students are also entitled to paid vacation. How much? This depends entirely on whether the company has a collective agreement or not. If so, your vacation entitlement will be based on that policy. Otherwise, the Federal Vacation Act applies: With a five-day work week of 40 hours, the employee is entitled to at least 20 vacation days. As a student worker, vacation entitlement is prorated based on hours worked: If the student works 20 hours a week, he or she is entitled to at least 10 days of paid leave.

Earnings

The main motivation to go to work as a student on the side is of course the money. But what can you earn as a working student? Minimum wage usually applies to students. Currently, this is at 9.35 euros / hour gross (as of 2020). However, many companies, especially in sought-after industrial sectors, pay a higher hourly wage of up to 15. Accordingly, a working student receives an hourly wage of between 9.35 and 15 euros.
